Hydrants for Hounds Event A “BarkOctober” Success

  Nate's Honor Animal Rescue in Bradenton received some serious sprucing up with the help of Ringling College of Art & Design (RCAD) incoming freshmen at its 1st annual “Hydrants for Hounds” event held recently at this popular pet rescue and adoption facility located at 951 Lorraine Road in Bradenton.

  Nate's Events Chairwoman Jessica Ortiz got the idea for the event when Dari Oglesby, Nate's CEO sent her a Pinterest pin of a fire hydrant painted like a dog. She contacted the Manatee County administration that then donated 4 retired hydrants for the event. She then asked Ringling College of Art & Design if they get 4 freshmen to come help by decoratively painting the 4 hydrants.

  As part of their Ringling College orientation, incoming freshmen are required to participate in one day of community service at a charity of their choice. What Ortiz got when she asked was not 4, but 35 talented young artists. The Ringling students started early painting rooms, new signs and, of course, those 4 hydrants while guests wandered through the facility greeting dogs and learning more about the good works done by Nate's. Guests were greeted at the entrance by 9 adorable 9-week-old hound-mix puppies. While the puppies got lots of oohs and aahs, there were 13 cottages, each with 6 dogs looking for homes which a number of them happily found.

  Nate's Honor Animal Rescue began when 4 women asked Nate Benderson if they could hold adoption events on one of his properties' parking lots. Benderson, whose love of animals is well-documented, went much further, providing the space for Nate's Adoption Center in Cooper Creek, and later the 8 acres on which Nate's Ranch sits today. Attesting to the generosity of Sarasota and Bradenton area people, last year Nate's adopted out 1,500 animals, and has already passed the 1,300 mark already this year. "We’d love to adopt out 2,000 animals this year," Ortiz said.

  The next event to aid Nate's Honor Animal Rescue will be the "Gone to the Dogs" adoption and costume contest sponsored by David Weekly Homes on October 27th. More information is available at nateshonoranimalrescue.org/events.

July, 2016 Sarasota Real Estate Report

  The Sarasota-Manatee County real estate market continued to slow in volume in July although the median price of both single-family homes and condos/townhomes rose.

  In July, Sarasota County recorded closings on single-family homes sales of 680 and condo/townhomes sales of 255 compared to 868 single-family homes and 338 condos and townhomes in July, 2015 for an overall drop year over year of 22.4%. In Sarasota County the drop was across both single-family homes and condo/townhomes.

  In Manatee County, volumes rose slightly. There were closings on 578 single-family homes and 214 condo/townhomes in July of this year versus 574 single-family homes and 192 condos/townhomes in the same month in 2015 for an overall year over year sales volume increase of 3.4%.

  The Sarasota-Manatee County real estate market remains a seller’s market with slightly over a 4 month supply of properties (4.2 months in Sarasota County and 4.4 months in Manatee County) on the market compared to the 6-month supply which is considered to represent a balance between buyer and seller pressures. Because of this seller’s market situation, the median price of properties in both counties continued to rise. In Sarasota County the median price of single-family homes rose from $219,500 last year to $242,500 this July. In Manatee County, the median price of single-family homes rose from $250,000 last July to $279,250 this July. For condos and townhomes, the median price in Sarasota County rose from $190,000 last July to $205,000 this July while in Manatee County the median price of condos and townhomes rose from $152,000 last year to $185,250 this July.

  Data for a single month’s statistics can be distorted, but over the past 12 months, Sarasota County single-family home sales volumes have decreased by 21.7% from 2015 levels while condo sales decreased by 24.6%. Conversely, Manatee County single-family home sales have actually increased slightly by 0.7% from 2015 levels while condo/townhome sales have actually increased by 11.5%.

  July marks the 7th month this year where pending sales across both counties are down and the 6th month where the supply of homes available for sale has been higher than the same period last year. Based on market dynamics, it is reasonable to expect that prices will adjust to the slowing of demand and the increase in properties on the market. “I believe we will see these trends level off in the coming months,” said Linda Formella, 2016 President of the Realtors Association of Sarasota and Manatee. That will likely present opportunities for those planning to come to the Florida Sun Coast this fall and winter.

It's AquaPalozza Time off Longboat Key

  It was AquaPalooza time off Longboat Key, a grand sandbar party that took place this weekend on August 13th at Potter's Cove in the waters off Longboat Key.

  The event, which its sponsor, Marine Max of Sarasota, called "The Largest Party on Water" actually took place off Jewfish Key, a small private island off Longboat Key. AquaPalooza events are held in many cities around the country but this was the first time it's been held in the Sarasota Florida area. “It’s a customer appreciation that Sea Ray, a major supplier of recreational boats, started a few years ago,” says Jason LeFevre, general manager of Marine Max of Sarasota. LeFevre added, "Sea Ray owners are typically both young and not so young families that have a good time tubing or gathering their boats together. It’s not a big booze - go fast boating thing. It's more just a time and place to congregate and have fun."

  The waters surrounding Jewfish Key are a popular hangout spot for boaters. The party, including a DJ was scheduled to run only run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. to avoid distrubing Longboat Key residents during the evening hours.

  The event came to be just a week after the town of Longboat Key received an official opinion from Florida Attorney General's office that its attempts to limit noise on the water went beyond its local jurisdiction. Longboat Police were out in force making sure people adhered to the laws the local police are authorized to enforce. "looking forward to the event, Deputy Chief Frank Rubino said, "We're not looking to harass anybody. We just want to make sure there's no fights, no alcohol-related incidents and everybody just has a good time."

  While some objected to the noise that was sure to accompany the event, others felt that the water belongs to everyone and the noise was just coming from people out having a good time.

  Only time will tell whether this first AquaPalooza evolves to become a regular event where, like so many other events in the Sarasota area, many people come, have a good time, and go home happy to live in an area that "just knows how to have day of good, clean fun."
